YouTube’s Video Quality is Noticeably Better Than Viddler’s

by Jorge Escobar on January 29, 2009

With YouTube’s time limit gone, I was now thinking about what other factors could influence me on sharing my personal videos with family and friends using Google’s service.

Quality sealed the deal.

Yesterday’s snow fall gave me a great opportunity to film my dog Mac running around, and I uploaded the video to Viddler, which is what I had been using so far for my videos.

You can see the video below:

The video looked very jumpy, like the frame rate of delivery was around 10 fps. The original video is a 640 by 480 AVI, with a Bit Rate of 128kbps, MPEG Layer-3 Audio compression and 30 fps. The Data rate is about 827 kbps.

Just to compare, I uploaded the same file to YouTube, and you can see it below:

I have a very powerful computer in the office, with a DS3 Internet connection, and to me the quality difference is outstanding. YouTube’s clip looks so much better, and when I turn on the “High Quality” flag, it looks almost as good as the original.

Viddler may have to invest in better infrastructure if it plans to compete with YouTube in this space.

Do you see the same results as me? Let me know!

Cute Dog! I didn’t like the fact that I had to start the video over to watch the youtube video in HQ.

That’s just me and not biased in any way :)

LOL Rob! Thanks for dropping by (and thanks for the doggie props).

I really like Viddler as a whole, but the video frame rate and compression is something that began to be noticeable and as a content producer, I want my content to look great!

I look forward to hear (and report) on any developments you guys have on this area.
