Social Media is a Personal Support System

by Jorge Escobar on June 24, 2009

I’ve seen it several times and it’s not mentioned enough.

Social media can be a very important support system for you and anyone who’s going through a rough time. It doesn’t have to be a serious disease, some days you’re just mildly depressed or can’t see yourself out of a situation.

In the past three days I’ve seen the FriendFeed community wrap their arms around fellow users. From Drew Olanoff’s #BlameDrewsCancer initiative, to the exchange between Kol Tregaskes and his FriendFeed friends included above, I find more and more how these small supportive comments can turn any of us around.

Twitter doesn’t have this same effect, but I can see Facebook being a support system as well.

But since FriendFeed is my hangout, I have to say I feel pretty supported by the people around me. Of course, this is not an overnight thing; you really have to put the time and effort to know these people, but after a time you’ll feel the same way as I do.

And to all my FriendFeed friends: thank you.

Um, duh? It has been since "social media" was IRC and email lists.

True, I just wanted to point out what I’ve seen these past couple of days in FriendFeed. I haven’t experienced this tightness since IRC in the late 90’s ;)

This is certainly a point worth calling out. It also highlights the other no-brainer about how and why Twitter provides channel but FriendFeed supports communities. Millions of them, that overlap and morph and extend.

Upon reading the post I couldn’t help not to giggle, since I just recently discovered Jorge Escobar’s excellent blog a few days ago. The rest were totally in the dark for me, which is quite a shame considering I’ve been missing out on such well authored blogs like http://brandimpact.wordpress.com/ or http://blog.owengreaves.com.
